3 Tips for Avoiding Relapse Triggers and Maintaining Sobriety After Rehab

    Last updated 15 days ago

Going to a rehab center is only the first step in a healthy recovery from a substance addiction. Once you return home, it is important to surround yourself with supportive individuals and a positive environment that will help you avoid temptation to use again. Here are a few tips to help you build this network of support once you have completed your rehab treatment:

    1. Talk to your friends and family about your treatment: Open communication about your concerns after rehab will help you work through these issues in a positive way. Make your goals clear to those around you, and don’t be afraid to reach out to family members or friends when you need them. You may have to adjust the group of people around you, as it can be difficult to avoid temptation when you are still around those who you used with in the past.
    2. Attend sober living support groups: Even when you are able to rely on close friends and family, you may still need the understanding of those who have been through similar experiences to yours. By attending a support group, ideally one through your rehab center, you can find this sort of support and further grow from sharing your story.
    3. Be aware of the challenges of addiction: Overcoming addiction is both physically and mentally difficult, and it does not happen overnight. Months or years after your rehab, you might have phantom cravings. Temptation of this nature can be triggered by stress or emotional turmoil, so be sure that you establish a healthy stress relief routine such as weekly massages, yoga, or regular exercise.

If you or a loved one is suffering with addiction or struggling after rehab, the programs of Roque Center can offer the medical support needed for full recovery. Contact us at (714) 421-4885 or visit our website for more information about our services.

A Look at the Growing Prescription Drug Abuse Epidemic in America

    Last updated 1 month ago

Every day, 40 Americans die from the abuse of prescription painkillers, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Overdoses of opioid-based prescriptions kill more people than overdoses of cocaine and heroin combined. Last year, 12 million Americans admitted to abusing prescription drugs.

    • Common Abusers - Abuse is more common in men than women. Non-Hispanic whites more commonly abuse painkillers than other races, and abuse is also more common in rural than in urban areas. A middle-aged person is also more likely to abuse prescription drugs than a younger person, according to the Office of National Drug Policy.
    • Number of Deaths - Abuse of prescription drugs is the fastest growing drug problem in the U.S. According to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention prescription drug study, in 2007, approximately 27,000 unintentional drug overdose deaths occurred in the U.S. For every unintentional overdose death, nine people are admitted for substance abuse treatment, 35 people visit the ER, and 161 people report drug abuse or dependence. The rate of opioid prescriptions by practitioners has also greatly increased over the past decade, adding fuel to the epidemic.
    • Other Indications of the Prescription Drug Epidemic - Over the past four years, armed robberies of the nation’s pharmacies have gone up 80%, according to the Drug Enforcement Agency. Florida had the most pharmacy holdups and California had the second most. Since 2006, there have been more than 2,800 drug store robberies, and the numbers continue to rise each year. Last year, the California State Board of Pharmacy reported that unexplained losses of controlled substances increased 44%.
